Collaborative AI systems (CAISs) aim at working together with humans in a shared space to achieve a common goal. This critical setting yields hazardous circumstances that could harm human beings. Thus, building such systems with strong assurances of compliance with requirements, domain-specific standards and regulations is of greatest importance. Only few scale impact has been reported so far for such systems since much work remains to manage possible risks. We identify emerging problems in this context and then we report our vision, as well as the progress of our multidisciplinary research team composed of software/systems, and mechatronics engineers to develop a risk-driven assurance process for CAISs.

Global AI Survey: AI proves its worth, but few scale impact

Most companies report measurable benefits from AI where it has been deployed; however, much work remains to scale impact, manage risks, and retrain the workforce. A group of high performers shows the way, as explained in this article by Arif Cam, Michael Chui and Bryce Hall of McKinsey. Adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to increase, and the technology is generating returns. The findings of the latest McKinsey Global Survey on the subject show a nearly 25 percent year-over-year increase in the use of AI2 in standard business processes, with a sizable jump from the past year in companies using AI across multiple areas of their business. A majority of executives whose companies have adopted AI report that it has provided an uptick in revenue in the business areas where it is used, and 44 percent say AI has reduced costs.

While AI continues to enjoy a continuously increasing adoption in 2019, much work is still needed in order for it to create significant impact -- McKinsey reveals in their released 2019 Global AI Survey paper. Let's look further into the main findings of this year's survey. Apart from this, 43 percent of the respondents also reported lower costs due to AI adoption. With this, we can see that AI appears to be quite a useful addition in the existing tools of companies. This is an increase from last year's 47 percent. However, the gap between the high performers and other companies remains wide.
